Smoked Apple Crisp Recipe

This smoked apple crisp recipe screams fall, and it’s so fun to make after a day of apple picking. But, don’t limit yourself to only making it in the fall time!

Put this smoked apple crisp on the grill after you’ve cooked dinner any time of year and serve it piping hot when dinner is finished.

This can also be made in the oven, and it’s damn delicious that way too.

That said, by adding apple wood to the grill, you augment the apple flavors of the dessert with a subtle smoky flavor that makes this dish something unique.

What Apples Are Best For Baking?

There are so many varieties of apples, but which ones are best for this smoked apple crisp? I grew up eating a version of this dessert made with granny smith apples.

Granny Smith’s are a good choice because they keep their structure when baked. This keeps them from turning into apple sauce after baking.

That said, I prefer Honeycrisp apples because they keep their structure just as well, but have a better flavor than a Granny Smith. If you don’t have either, a golden delicious apple will also work well.

Fun Variations For Smoked Apple Crisp

Bourbon: Adding three tablespoons of your favorite bourbon to the topping mix is a nice addition to this dessert.
Maple: Adding some maple syrup to the topping is another way to change this up slightly, try adding 1/4 cup.
BOTH: Knob Creek makes a smoked maple bourbon that I love to use in this smoked apple crisp recipe. If you can get some, try adding three tablespoons to the topping mixture. If you can’t find it, just add some maple syrup and your favorite bourbon.
