Skeptical about these wireless thermometers after previously reviewing two competing products, this Typhur Sync review took months to complete.
The extended time using this product in various conditions allowed for success or failure in a number of conditions.
Is this finally the wireless thermometer that’s been repeatedly promised by various brands, or another disappointment?
As standard, there was no compensation given for this review. The unit was provided free of charge. The opinions are those of the good folks from grillseeker.com who tested it.
Item Specs: Typhur Sync Dual
What We Loved:
Ease Of Use: Setting up this thermometer out of the box was intuitive and took less than three minutes. This is a welcome feature for anyone who may struggle with technology, etc.
Accuracy: During the extensive testing of this unit, the temperature readings were constantly compared against those taken from competing brands instant read and leave in thermometers.
The temperatures indicated from the Typhur Sync were within one half of a degree for both internal and ambient temperatures of multiple independent thermometers, and sous vide circulators.
Battery Life: In the longest test conducted (36 hours sous vide cook) the probe and base stayed charged.
In full disclosure there was no longevity stress test conducted to see just how long the battery would last, but if 36 hours isn’t long enough battery life, we aren’t sure what is.
Adding to the battery life is that the unit is rechargeable, so no need to buy new batteries.
Connectivity: The biggest detractor from similar units tested has been connectivity; it’s always been frustrating. Not the case with the Typhur Sync.
The range on the bluetooth was more than sufficient, and with WiFi the range was incredible. Not affected by metal or ceramic cooker / smoker lids, exterior grade metal home doors, walls, etc.
In the months this unit was tested, it never lost connectivity. Not once. This is beyond impressive.
App: Monitoring the unit via the app was a breeze, even for those that are technology challenged. There’s more information than most people will ever need, and it’s displayed in a logical manner that just makes sense.
Versatility: While the probes are dishwasher safe, that’s not a huge selling point. After all, how hard is it to manually wash these probes?
What is a huge selling point however, is that they are waterproof. This gives the probes the ability to be used in hot oil for deep frying, or in a bag for sous vide. The juices that collect in a vacuum sous vide bag don’t effect or damage the probe.
The Typhur Sync probes have a high temperature resistance (internal temp up to 212°F/100°C and ambient temp up to 572°F/300°C) that allow for deep frying and that function alone was impressive.
Convenience: Gone are the days of setting up grill temperature probes, and meat temperature probes connected by wires that are always tangled.
A user doesn’t realize how cumbersome those wires are until you can effectively operate without them.
What Could Be Improved
Being so impressed with this unit overall, there are two issues that are worth noting.
First, the diameter of the probe. If the presentation of a slice of prime rib, or a lamb chop is super important, understand that the thickness of the probe is going to leave a decent sized hole in any meat it’s inserted into.
Definitely not a deal breaker, but it would be preferable if this technology could be fit into a probe the size of the one used in the Typhur InstaProbe.
Next, the unit isn’t outrageously expensive for what it is, but it’s certainly not free and the lack of an included protective storage case was disappointing.
Including a simple case to store and protect the unit when not in use would be nice.
Who It’s For?
This unit is perfect for not just the outdoor enthusiast, but any one who cooks. From the oven, to the air fryer, deep fryer, grill, rotisserie, or smoker. This unit is very versatile, and the consistent connectivity makes it a joy to use.
Final Thoughts
Having previously reviewed both the MEATER and the Meat Stick, and not recommending either, it’s encouraging to see the technology finally works with the Typhur Sync.
In full disclosure, the aforementioned tests of competitor units were conducted some time ago. Maybe they have improved since then.
This Typhur Sync review took much longer than the normal review to publish because it needed to be pushed to ensure quality over time. It exceeded all expectations and is HIGHLY recommended.
Excellent review and your pros and cons line up perfectly with my findings. I too think for the money, a case should be provided. Thanks for your thoughts, Rob
